Wastewater Collections Operator

Boxelder Sanitation District seeks a full-time Wastewater Collections Operator to join its team in Fort Collins, CO.  Our District maintains 100 miles of sewer lines and treats approximately 1,940,000 gallons of wastewater every day, serving portions of Fort Collins, Windsor, Severance, Timnath, and unincorporated areas of Larimer and Weld Counties. This position involves many functions focusing on routine operation and maintenance of the district’s sanitary sewer collection systems. This position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to be obtained within 6 months of hire.  Our District offers an excellent benefits package including paid time off, retirement, paid holidays and professional development opportunities.  

Responsibilities Include:

  • Operate equipment such as blowers, compressors, electrical controls, engines, flow monitoring equipment, generators, hand tools, safety equipment, motors, power tools, and pumps.
  • Perform line cleaning of the district’s sanitary sewer collection and transmission systems.
  • Assist in documentation and record keeping of cleaning and video activities.
  • Operate high-velocity sewer system cleaner/vacuum equipment for sanitary sewer systems and a water truck, and become proficient in repair and maintenance of this equipment.  
  • Utilize video inspection equipment and become proficient in the repair and maintenance of this equipment.
  • Utilize construction equipment (e.g. excavating equipment, heavy vehicles) used for plant improvement projects and collection system line extensions, including remediation projects.
  • Rehabilitate, repair, and maintain lift stations, gravity sanitary sewer lines, force mains and appurtenances, manholes, gravity sanitary sewer service connections, join and fit pipes, and pipe lines of various material, type and size.
  • Be aware of and practice safety measures on issues including hydrogen sulfide, methane, explosive conditions, etc.
  • Perform locates of district sewer infrastructure and inspections of sanitary sewer hookups.
  • Provide field inspection of sanitary sewer infrastructure construction/installation by developers, to ensure compliance with District Standards and Specifications.
  • Identify collection system problems and advise Operations Manager, District Manager, and other appropriate district personnel.
  • Assist in the construction of sewer lines including pipe placement, bedding of pipe, excavation and backfill. • Assist in the routine operation of the wastewater pump stations of the district including daily monitoring of the pump station operations, identification of normal and abnormal operation conditions, recording and evaluation of operations data, and emergency generator and alarm notification systems.
  • Assist with basic layout, staking and survey work necessary to support district construction work.
  • Assist in the performance of and perform physical measurements in and of the collection system.
  • Assist with pretreatment operations when needed including sampling and inspections.  

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Colorado commercial driver’s license (CDL) Level B or higher preferred; required within 6 months of hire date. • Experience in wastewater and/or similar field highly preferred; related experience required.
  • Maintain valid Colorado Collection System Operator Certificate Class 1, and
  • Maintain valid Colorado Wastewater System Operator Certificate Class D; (both certifications to be obtained within 12 months of hire or within 3 OCPO testing cycles)
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery required to perform duties (e.g. jet truck, video van, backhoe)
  • Ability to read and understand engineering construction drawings and specifications as required for new sewer line construction inspection
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to job responsibilities
  • Ability to work in stressful situations, under time constraints, and lead others in a team environment
  • Computer skills in MS Word, Excel and software used for plant alarms, flow monitoring, lift station alarms, flow monitoring, and other equipment related to job responsibilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of wastewater collection system operations  

Working Environment:

Work in a team environment. Able to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions during day or night year-round. This position typically works during daytime hours Monday - Friday, with rotating oncall shifts required for emergencies and call-outs. No overnight shifts. 

Physical Demands

Routinely performs manual labor, at times physically strenuous, lift 60 pounds routinely, ability to operate equipment necessary to perform functions, and capacity to intermittently sit, stand, walk, climb, stoop, bend and kneel.

  • Starting hourly pay depending on experience and qualifications: $20.00 – $28.00 per hour
